Welcome to the Secondary School

Secondary Principal, Mr. James Mattiace
Greetings! Thank you for your interest in the AST Secondary School. Growing up in New York I learned a number of English language expressions that do not always translate well into other languages, and a host of mixed language expressions that only make sense if you are a New Yorker. However, if you have heard the expression "punching above his(her) weight" you may soon realize that is exactly how to describe the American School in Taichung. It is a small school with a global outlook. AST students are afforded so many opportunities that you could be forgiven for overestimating the size of the school. If you take a look at our AP class opportunities alone, you will see the diversity of choice we offer. That is part of what makes us a special place; we are a small school with a big view. We get to know our students on an individual level and then our teachers help them create opportunities for learning, which go far beyond the expected capacity of the institution. AST students get to interact with global leaders, industrial icons, and entrepreneurial innovators due to the connections we have with our faculty, our alumni, and the world community. As you look at our course offerings, our teacher pages, and the photos and videos on our website, take a moment to think about how many different collaborative hands go into each of those successes. At AST, we do not just celebrate the finished product, we reflect on and celebrate the process it took to get there. At AST, we are excited for learning and happy to be here. Our mission is what drives us; global citizens who who strive for excellence, act with integrity, and value responsibility.
