High School Specials
Specials courses provide students with a wide variety of subjects to explore. Whether students are curious about these diverse disciplines for their future career or as a personal interest that will enrich their lives, these hands-on topics help our students to become more well-rounded as they discover their passions.
Design and Visual Arts
High school students can take several different design and art classes. Art classes range from foundations classes up to AP Art, for which they can earn college credit. In design classes, students work with a variety of media and produce digital, video and print publication items.
Music
The bells choir is a great way to learn how to read and play music. It is also an important space to learn how to work as a team to create complex musical performances.
Drama
Students explore themes, characters, plot, and other dimensions of theater. They practice speaking and acting, building their confidence in front of an audience.
Computer Science
Students can learn the fundamentals of computing and programming. They can earn college credit at many universities for AP Computer Science Principles. These classes are a great compliment to AST's robust robotics program.
Design Thinking
Design Thinking follows the 5 principles of Design Thinking which include Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test. It is a fun and human-centred course which focuses on the needs, wants and limitations of the end user. It increases students’ skills of empathy, perseverance, determination and collaboration. After some in-depth investigation, students develop skills in prototyping, experimentation and adaptation using new and existing technologies to create new products. The concept of sustainability is also a consideration when students decide on a solution.
Physical Education
Students learn how to lead a healthy and active life in Physical Education. They maintain a weekly fitness tracker, take weekly fitness tests, participate in fitness challenges and maintain a healthy living blog. They are exposed to a wide variety of sports and activities, such as basketball, soccer, cricket, badminton, dance, and ultimate frisbee.
