Unit 1: Informational Text
English 9 is currently working on an informational text unit, where students will conduct a research project by reading and analyzing a variety of sources in order to write a cause and effect paper with an annotated bibliography. Students elected to study the topic of police brutality. We are currently reading and evaluating texts as a class. Students will later zoom in on a more specific aspect of this topic, such as a particular solution. Because of the complex nature of this unit, students will receive lessons from the school librarian on plagiarism, Boolean operators and other search techniques, and tips for evaluating the credibility of sources, especially webpages. Students will also go on a field trip to the National Library of Public Information in order to locate published print sources for their research project.

Unit 1: Early American Traditions
English 11 just started their unit on Early American Traditions. The first class involved studying foundational myths related to Taiwanese and American culture, such as the Iroquois myth of the Woman who fell from the sky, chapters of Genesis from the King James Version of the Bible, background information about Haitian vodou, and Chinese flood myths. These myths will inform their understanding of Puritan values, the Iroquois Constitution, and the interaction of values in Arthur Miller's account of the Salem Witch Trials in The Crucible.
