Welcome to
Fourth grade learners are at an age known for intellectual stretching, wondering, debating, and questioning. All of these are signs of remarkable growth in the learners’ resilience, intellectual curiosity, maturing moral character, and capacity for independent thought. At AST, we cultivate and embrace this curiosity through the use of Responsive Classroom structures, including Morning Meeting, Closing Circle, and reflective conversations around our impact on others. Beyond our strong sense of community and responsibility for others, our students also strive to balance that with rigor and authentic academic experiences.
When fourth graders enter the classroom, they quickly transition from being learners to taking on the roles of historians, geologists, publishers, and mathematicians through the use of hands-on, project-based experiences. This not only expands their knowledge of academic content, but, more importantly, it develops the skills needed to be critical thinkers, global citizens, and accepting members of our international community.

Our curriculum is based on the internationally recognized Common Core standards for Mathematics and English Language Arts, Next Generation Science Standards for Science, and AERO Social Studies. We have a strong emphasis on literacy, which is demonstrated through a balanced approach that includes writing workshops, guided reading groups, and targeted lessons to meet the individual needs of our learners. In addition to our more traditional subject areas, AST also provides diversity in our students’ schedule by integrating technology, STEM, physical education, art, music and Chinese into our weekly schedule.
Fourth grade at AST is a collaborative learning community which celebrates each other’s success and progress in our learning journeys.
