Students will read a teacher selected novel together as a class. Novel studies will focus more intensely on vocabulary, reading comprehension, inference, character traits and plot. Students will meet in reading groups to discuss the book and share their understanding of the text.
Students learn about character traits and development as well as the parts of a story including: characters, plot, setting, conflict and solution and are responsible for writing their own story that includes all of these parts. Students will apply the writing process of brainstorming, writing a rough draft, peer to peer editing, editing with a teacher, revisions and writing a final copy of their story. They will then create their stories digitally using websites like storyjumper.com or mystorybook.com.
I'm originally from Cape Town, South Africa and this will technically be my fifth year in Taiwan (2010-2013 & 2019 to present). Since graduating from the University of South Africa, I have been lucky enough to have lived and taught in Qatar, Indonesia and Taiwan. The past year and a half have been an exciting time for my wife and I, as we have returned to her home country and welcomed our baby daughter, Vera, into the world! My hobbies and passions include, reading, weightlifting, table top role-playing games & computer role-playing games, and spending time outdoors. I am excited to be looping with the learners from last year and look forward to being a part of their learning journey in Grade 4!
