Third grade is an exciting transitional year as students shift from learning to read towards reading to learn. This quarter students will continue to read up a storm while developing their comprehension skills in visible ways. They will build on how to ask good questions, identify how character traits can effect stories and make comprehend figurative language.
In writing, third grade students will begin the year with writing personal narratives and engaging more fully in the complete writing process, emphasizing drafting and revising their work.
Third grade students will begin the year by learning to round to the nearest 10 and 100. They continue to solidify their understanding of addition and subtraction skills within 1000. Then, students will develop an understanding of the meaning of multiplication and division of whole numbers through activities and problems involving equal-sized groups, arrays, and area models.
Social Studies: This quarter third grade students will focus on citizenship and what it means within the context of family, school, and their country. They will identify rights and responsibilities and explore different strategies to resolve conflict.
Later in the quarter, students will dive into geography and learn how to read and use maps and globes!
I was born and raised in Melbourne, Australia but also attended school in Northern Ireland where my parents and family are from. Being exposed to two different cultures was a unique experience and not only opened my eyes to travel but makes me who I am today. Now I get to live in Taiwan with my own international family, my husband Dr. Brown (Canadian), and my daughters Keira (born in China) and Maya (born in Guatemala).
Within my lessons, I provide a wide variety of teaching strategies in order to meet the needs of each one of my students. I believe that respectful, caring bonds with children and their families are the vital foundation for a wonderful elementary experience. When I'm not in the classroom you will find me cooking with my daughters or exploring new running trails!
I am looking forward to a fun and successful school year here at the American School in Taichung!
